Der Göta-Kanal war Schwedens größtes Bauprojekt, als 58.000 Soldaten ihn 1832 fertigstellten, und ein Jahrhundert lang transportierte er die Fracht des Landes zwischen der Westküste und der Ostsee. Heute befördert er Urlauber auf Booten, die mit Gehgeschwindigkeit fahren, und daneben verläuft der Ziehweg: Schotter, autofrei und flach.

Diese Tour führt den Kanal von Töreboda nach Söderköping und, wo der Kanal zum Vänernsee übergeht, umgeht sie die Oberseite des Sees anstatt ihn zu überqueren. Das fügt zwei Tage hinzu, die die Boote nie sehen: die Tiveden-Wälder entlang des Westufers, eine Nacht in der Holz-Hafenstadt Askersund und die Nebenstraßen durch Zinkgruvan und Godegård, die dich mit 500 Metern Höhenunterschied nach Motala bringen.

Die Schleusen sind die Wahrzeichen. Die älteste des Landes in Forsvik, die Treppe von sieben in Berg, wo ein Boot eine Stunde braucht, um das zu erklimmen, was ein Fahrrad in einer Minute passiert, und der letzte Abstieg durch die Seen nach Söderköping. Rund um sie: die Festung Karlsborg, die Kathedrale von Linköping und Söderköping mit seinem Spa-Hotel und seinem Eis.

Fünf Reisetage haben im Durchschnitt 51 km auf dem Schotter-Ziehweg und kleinen Straßen, mit zwei hügeligen Seetagen in der Mitte.

Deine Zimmer und der tägliche Gepäcktransfer sind inklusive; das Fahrrad ist deine Wahl, deins oder eines von uns, und ein E-Bike nimmt den Stachel aus den Hügeln von Motala.

Entlang des Kanals wechseln sich die Nächte zwischen Hotels und den kleineren Orten, aus denen die Ziehwegstädte bestehen: ein Pensionat bei den Schleusen, ein B&B in einem rot gestrichenen Haus, hin und wieder eine kleine Kanalhütte für euch allein. Abendessen werden mit dem Haus oder in einem Restaurant, das nur wenige Minuten entfernt ist, arrangiert, und der Reiseführer sagt dir, welches für jede Nacht.

  5. Mountain terrain for experienced riders

Sweden sits at the easy end. The Sydkustleden is rated 1; the Kattegattleden, Sydostleden and Vänerleden are rated 2 for one or two longer days, and so is the Göta Canal tour, for its two days round Lake Vättern. An e-bike softens any of them.

Swedish coastal hotels are small and sell out early, so we book from a vetted list in each town instead of promising one property months ahead. You get the exact names the moment your booking is confirmed.

Our routes mix asphalt cycle paths, gravel towpaths and quiet country roads, so:

  • Trekking bike: the ideal machine, with wider tyres, mudguards and a rack

  • E-bike: suits all our routes and takes the sting out of coastal headwinds

  • Leave road and mountain bikes home; the first struggles on the canal gravel, the second is more than you need
