El Canal de Göta fue el mayor proyecto de construcción de Suecia cuando 58,000 soldados terminaron de excavarlos en 1832, y durante un siglo transportó la carga del país entre la costa oeste y el Báltico. Hoy en día, lleva a los vacacionistas, en barcos que se mueven a paso de caminante, y junto a él corre el camino de remolque: grava, sin coches y plano.

Este tour recorre el canal desde Töreboda hasta Söderköping y, donde el canal da paso al Lago Vättern, rodea la parte superior del lago en lugar de cruzarlo. Eso añade dos días que los barcos nunca ven: los bosques de Tiveden a lo largo de la costa oeste, una noche en el pueblo portuario de Askersund, y las carreteras secundarias a través de Zinkgruvan y Godegård que te llevan a Motala con 500 metros de ascenso en las piernas.

Las esclusas son los hitos. La más antigua del país en Forsvik, la escalera de siete en Berg, donde un barco tarda una hora en subir lo que una bicicleta pasa en un minuto, y el último tramo hacia abajo a través de los lagos hasta Söderköping. Alrededor de ellas: la fortaleza de Karlsborg, la catedral de Linköping y Söderköping con su hotel spa y su helado.

Cinco días de recorrido promedian 51 km por el camino de remolque de grava y pequeñas carreteras, con dos días de lago más montañosos en el medio.

Las cenas se organizan con la casa o en un restaurante a pocos minutos, y la guía te dice cuál para cada noche.

Sweden sits at the easy end. The Sydkustleden is rated 1; the Kattegattleden, Sydostleden and Vänerleden are rated 2 for one or two longer days, and so is the Göta Canal tour, for its two days round Lake Vättern. An e-bike softens any of them.

Swedish coastal hotels are small and sell out early, so we book from a vetted list in each town instead of promising one property months ahead. You get the exact names the moment your booking is confirmed.

Our routes mix asphalt cycle paths, gravel towpaths and quiet country roads, so:
