Skåne es la parte de Suecia que se parece a Dinamarca: plana, cultivada, bordeada de playas. El Sydkustleden recorre su parte inferior desde el Báltico en Simrishamn hasta el Öresund en Helsingborg, la tercera de las rutas nacionales de ciclismo del país, inaugurada en 2019 y la semana más fácil que ofrecemos.

Lo que le falta en ascensos lo compensa en lugares. Ales Stenar, un barco de piedra en la cima de un acantilado. Las calles de entramado de madera de Ystad. Smygehuk, el punto más al sur del país. Malmö, al que se llega a lo largo de su propia playa. Uppåkra, el asentamiento de la Edad de Hierro más grande de Escandinavia. La ciudadela de Landskrona y la isla de Ven, donde Tycho Brahe mapeó el cielo.

Cinco días de ciclismo cubren 232 km, nunca más de 54 km al día, por carriles bici, pequeñas carreteras costeras y caminos rurales de la llanura de Söderslätt. Una bicicleta de trekking es suficiente para todo ello; una bicicleta eléctrica convierte un viento en contra del Öresund en nada en absoluto.

Los hoteles están reservados, el equipaje viaja por delante de ti y la ruta vive en tu teléfono; la bicicleta es tuya para traer o nuestra para alquilar, de trekking, de grava o eléctrica.

No cada noche es un hotel. En Simrishamn y Ystad la dirección puede ser una casa boutique de seis habitaciones, en Landskrona un bed and breakfast. La cena es en la casa donde se cocina, y donde no se cocina, en un lugar que sugerimos a un corto paseo.

Hazlo como unas primeras vacaciones en bicicleta, una semana familiar con adolescentes, o un suave calentamiento antes de un verano sueco más largo.

Y termina con una isla y un castillo: Ven en la última mañana, y Helsingør con el Kronborg de Hamlet a veinte minutos en ferry desde el último hotel.

The route is planned, the hotels are booked and your bag is moved every day, but no group and no guide sets the pace. You leave when you like, stop where you like and ride each stage on your own schedule.

Every tour carries a fitness rating from 1 to 5:

  1. Short, flat days on cycle paths, fine for anyone who rides now and then

  2. Flat to gently rolling, 50–70 km a day, comfortable for regular leisure riders

  3. Longer days or some hills, best with a little training

  4. Sustained distance and climbing for fit cyclists

  5. Mountain terrain for experienced riders

Sweden sits at the easy end. The Sydkustleden is rated 1; the Kattegattleden, Sydostleden and Vänerleden are rated 2 for one or two longer days, and so is the Göta Canal tour, for its two days round Lake Vättern. An e-bike softens any of them.

Swedish coastal hotels are small and sell out early, so we book from a vetted list in each town instead of promising one property months ahead. You get the exact names the moment your booking is confirmed.

Our routes mix asphalt cycle paths, gravel towpaths and quiet country roads, so:

  • Trekking bike: the ideal machine, with wider tyres, mudguards and a rack

  • E-bike: suits all our routes and takes the sting out of coastal headwinds

  • Leave road and mountain bikes home; the first struggles on the canal gravel, the second is more than you need

E-bikes and comfortable trekking bikes come from local partners, brought to your first hotel and picked up at your last, so a one-way route costs you no extra logistics. Each bike has a lock, a pannier and a repair kit; helmets and child seats on request.

Sweden is an easy country for special diets: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options are standard at hotel breakfasts and clearly labelled in shops, and restaurants must tell you which allergens a dish contains.

Provide us with the details when you book and every hotel on your route hears about them.

Mid-May to late September. June brings the longest days and the quietest paths; July is the warmest month and the busiest on the coast; late August and September bring warm sea water, ripe orchards and empty beaches.

If you are choosing between the first and last weeks of the season, take the canal: its towpaths dry out fastest.
