Cada país ciclista tiene una ruta que todos recorren primero. En Suecia, es el Kattegattleden, la ruta nacional de ciclismo que se inauguró en 2015 a lo largo de la costa oeste y que le dio al país un camino señalizado, mayormente libre de coches, desde Helsingborg hasta Gotemburgo. La recorremos en seis días, una ciudad costera cada noche.

El recorrido es fácil. Aparte del cabo Kullaberg el primer día y la cordillera Hallandsås el segundo, el camino es plano, pavimentado, cerca del mar: viejos terraplenes de ferrocarril a través de bosques de pinos, paseos a lo largo de las playas de las ciudades, pequeñas carreteras entre campos y puertos pesqueros. El viento decide cuán duro se siente un día, lo que es el argumento a favor de una bicicleta eléctrica, y cada etapa termina con un baño.

Las ciudades dan vida a la semana. Helsingborg con sus jardines reales en Sofiero; Halmstad con la larga playa en Tylösand; Falkenberg, donde los salmones suben por el río bajo un puente de piedra; Varberg, con una fortaleza rodeada de agua y un balneario de agua fría sobre pilotes que ha sido el ritual de la ciudad desde 1903; y Gotemburgo al final, una ciudad portuaria que recompensa más a una bicicleta que a un coche.

Seis días de ciclismo cubren 334 km, de 37 a 74 km al día, siendo la etapa más larga la primera.

Lo recorres de forma autoguiada: hoteles reservados, maletas trasladadas cada día, la ruta en tu teléfono y una línea de apoyo para cualquier cosa que la carretera te presente. Trae tu propia bicicleta o añade una de las nuestras al reservar: una bicicleta de trekking, una bicicleta de gravel o una bicicleta eléctrica, que vale la pena en contra del viento.

Las camas son en su mayoría hoteles de pequeñas ciudades, pero esta es una costa de casas de huéspedes también: en una o dos noches la dirección puede ser un bed and breakfast administrado desde la propia casa de la familia. Donde la casa no sirve cena, te reservamos una mesa cerca o te decimos dónde comen los locales.

The route is planned, the hotels are booked and your bag is moved every day, but no group and no guide sets the pace. You leave when you like, stop where you like and ride each stage on your own schedule.

Every tour carries a fitness rating from 1 to 5:

  1. Short, flat days on cycle paths, fine for anyone who rides now and then

  2. Flat to gently rolling, 50–70 km a day, comfortable for regular leisure riders

  3. Longer days or some hills, best with a little training

  4. Sustained distance and climbing for fit cyclists

  5. Mountain terrain for experienced riders

Sweden sits at the easy end. The Sydkustleden is rated 1; the Kattegattleden, Sydostleden and Vänerleden are rated 2 for one or two longer days, and so is the Göta Canal tour, for its two days round Lake Vättern. An e-bike softens any of them.

Swedish coastal hotels are small and sell out early, so we book from a vetted list in each town instead of promising one property months ahead. You get the exact names the moment your booking is confirmed.

Our routes mix asphalt cycle paths, gravel towpaths and quiet country roads, so:

  • Trekking bike: the ideal machine, with wider tyres, mudguards and a rack

  • E-bike: suits all our routes and takes the sting out of coastal headwinds

  • Leave road and mountain bikes home; the first struggles on the canal gravel, the second is more than you need

E-bikes and comfortable trekking bikes come from local partners, brought to your first hotel and picked up at your last, so a one-way route costs you no extra logistics. Each bike has a lock, a pannier and a repair kit; helmets and child seats on request.

Sweden is an easy country for special diets: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options are standard at hotel breakfasts and clearly labelled in shops, and restaurants must tell you which allergens a dish contains.

Mid-May to late September. June brings the longest days and the quietest paths; July is the warmest month and the busiest on the coast; late August and September bring warm sea water, ripe orchards and empty beaches.

If you are choosing between the first and last weeks of the season, take the canal: its towpaths dry out fastest.
