Every cycling country has one route that everyone rides first. In Sweden it is the Kattegattleden, the national cycle route that opened in 2015 along the west coast and gave the country a signed, mostly car-free path from Helsingborg to Gothenburg. We ride it in six days, a beach town every night.
The riding is easy. Apart from the Kullaberg headland on the first day and the Hallandsås ridge on the second, the path is flat, paved, close to the sea: old railway embankments through pine forest, promenades along town beaches, small roads between fields and fishing harbours. The wind decides how hard a day feels, which is the argument for an e-bike, and every stage ends with a swim.
The towns carry the week. Helsingborg with its royal gardens at Sofiero; Halmstad with the long beach at Tylösand; Falkenberg, where salmon run up the river under a stone bridge; Varberg, with a moated fortress and a cold-water bathhouse on stilts that has been the town's ritual since 1903; and Gothenburg at the end, a harbour city that rewards a bike more than a car.
Six riding days cover 334 km, from 37 to 74 km a day, with the longest stage first.
You ride it self-guided: hotels booked, bags moved every day, the route on your phone and a support line for anything the road throws at you. A trekking bike is included; an e-bike costs a little extra and is worth it in a headwind.
Couples, friends of mixed fitness, first-time tourers: the coast has room for all of them.
